Glitter Gal 10 to Midnight

 - by Playing with Polish

Ahhh, I love holo polish! Glitter Gal’s 10 to Midnight is a dark grey linear holo polish. It’s a great color, and the holo is visible in most lights which is a big plus. The bottles may be small, but this is good stuff! So far all the Glitter Gals I have tried applied nicely and wore well.

Coping with Cancer through Nail Polish

 - by Playing with Polish

Today I am sharing an article written by a guest blogger, Jackie Clark of the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance. She shares with us how feeling beautiful can help a woman cope with cancer.

Feeling beautiful can help women feel better about themselves

Being diagnosed with cancer, such as mesothelioma can be emotionally devastating for a woman. Even though women who experience various cancer diagnoses’ can often find them depressing, there is no need for that to be the case. Not all cancer prognoses have to be bleak. Instead women need to feel beautiful in their own skin despite the hand they have been dealt.

Fashion and beauty are among the most powerful tools to boost a person’s self-confidence. They can give someone a sense of power and ability to tackle anything that the day may bring. For women, one of simplest fashion techniques is one of the most powerful and confidence boosting ones—Nails! For women, painted nails instantly gives them a feminine quality and makes them feel alluring and sexy. No matter what the nail color of choice, whether it be fire engine red, bright neon pink, or a classical French manicure, having painted nails can instantly add a sleek and polished look to any women’s appearance, thereby making her feel good about herself.

For women with mesothelioma cancer, getting their nails done is a great coping mechanism. Not only do manicured nails make a woman feel good about herself, the manicure experience itself is quite relaxing. What could be better than being pampered in such a manner? A manicure involves a complete scrub down of the nails and cuticles, and simply watching the nail art of the woman’s choice gives her a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction with herself. When she sees the ending product, she feels good about herself despite any earlier emotions she felt that day. Many women find it a good stress reliever to get their nails done, especially after a bad hair day or a bad day at work. When a woman has perfectly manicured nails, even on bad hair days, she can just tell herself, “Well, at least my nails look fabulous!”

Getting your nails painted is also a good social activity. Women need social interaction. Groups of friends often go to the salon together and chitchat over this and that and enjoy simple gossip. A great idea for women with mesothelioma is to create a nail salon group. The group can meet up on certain days and discuss the trials and tribulations of their conditions and what they are going through, thereby giving each other the support they need.

Overall, it is important for women to realize that a cancer diagnosis doesn’t mean they aren’t beautiful. Beauty is an internal quality that pokes its way through to the outside world. What a better way to show off your newfound confidence than by having fabulously painted nails.

Butter London Knackered

 - by Playing with Polish

Knackered,  extremely tired or a horse that is no longer able to work being rendered into glue or dog food, is a lovely polish. It looks like neither of those things to me. You can be assured that I will not be sending my bottle off to be made into glue! The Butter London website describes it as, “a sheer, twinkling oyster shade flecked with micro glitter particles.” I have no clue why they would describe the color as oyster. To my eye it is a silvery duochrome that shifts from purple to a greyish-green. It is also infused with very fine holographic glitter. Me like!! :-D

This polish is quite sheer. I used five coats , and I still have some VNL. Other than being sheer, the application was very good. Five coats really is a lot though. It might be a good bet for layering. Five coats and a top coat shown.

PDX Polish

My husband and I just got back from a week in Portland, OR. We had a blast. We enjoyed hours of walking around and exploring the beautiful city. The vegetarian/vegan food and craft beer there is phenomenal :-D While we were there I picked-up a few of the new Butter London spring/summer colors (tax free baby!!).

I managed to catch a cold on the tail end of the trip. I feel like crud, but I will try to get some swatches up soon. I can’t wait to try these! Maybe a spot of color will make me feel better.

Ahhh, flakie glitter. Fun! I think it looks like magic fish food, although my brother who works with fish disagrees. Regardless, with its green, orange and blue duochrome glitter flakes this is cool top coat! :-)

Badly Behaved Nails :-(

 - by Playing with Polish

Or clumsy me! Generally my nails are pretty well behaved. I try to take decent care of them, and they don’t give me too much trouble. However, since Christmas my nails and I have not been getting along. I broke my left thumbnail on Christmas Day (I was very disappointed as my husband gave me some lovely polish for Christmas). Finally as I was starting to get to a reasonable length again, I managed to break my right thumbnail! :-( I broke this one even further down, and after cutting my nails all the way down my thumbnail is quite lopsided. *Sigh* I suppose it is silly to be so bummed about my nails, but polishing them is so much fun and having pretty nails bring me joy. To add a bit of insult to injury my birthday was two weeks ago, and now I also have birthday polish languishing in my new polish bin.

What do you do to make your nails grow faster? Any tips for rocking shorties? Some of you do it so well! I just hate the way very short nails look on me. Thanks for reading and for letting me vent a bit!

Ozotic 513

Ozotic 513 is a grape purple polish with crazy, awesome  linear holo! :-D At $18 a bottle this polish is pricy, but it does pack a sparkly punch! My husband got me several Ozotic polishes for Christmas. These were my first Ozotics, but they won’t be my last :-D

Nails Inc Fashion’s Night Out

 - by Playing with Polish

Fashion’s Night Out is a fabulous blue-grey metallic. It looks like a silvery gunmetal with a touch of blue in the bottle, but once on the nail the blue really comes out to play. This  is a really cool color! :-)

Application was excellent. This polish was quite opaque and almost provided full coverage in one coat. Two coats and a top coat shown.

Orly Androgynie

 - by Playing with Polish

Androgynie is from Orly’s Holiday Soireé collection. The combination of the sheer black base and the gold and multi-colored glitter make me think of New Year’s Eve. This is a fun color, and I got a lot of compliments while wearing it.

Application was ok. I would have liked the hex glitter pieces to have distributed more evenly (some nails got more pieces than others).  Three coats and a top coat shown.

Christmas Stuff

 - by Playing with Polish

This year for Christmas my husband gave me a number of goodies from my wish list, but he also surprised me with some fun nail stuff. I recently organized my nail polish and labeled items that were “swatched,” “untried,” etc. He checked my nail polish bins and blog to determine what I didn’t already have, so he could decided what to get. He was right I didn’t have them, and I was so touched. I loved the research and thought that went into the gift! :-) I managed to break my thumbnail pretty badly yesterday (and attempted a repair), so hopefully I will still have have length to my nails. However even if I end up trimming my nails all the way down, my sappy self is cheered by my sweet husband. :-D I still wish I was a bit less clumsy though!

I am hoping to try my hand at a bit of frankening in the coming year. It seems like the glitter is going to make a huge mess, but it sounds like fun!
