My First Gradient

 - by Playing with Polish

I have been loving all of the fun gradient manicures I have been seeing on other beauty blogs, so I grabbed some make-up sponges and decided to give it a shot. I was thinking of a Cartier rolling ring when I picked these colors, but on my nails I am reminded of candy corn more than jewelry :-) It’s a bit more subtle than I had hoped it would be. I think I need more contrast between the colors. Perhaps using a black base? Having said that this particular mani was also a bit photo shy. I think it looked much better in real life!

Numerous coats and a top coat shown (since I sponged them on, and then did some touch-up work I am not sure exactly how many coats are in the final result).

Orly Androgynie

 - by Playing with Polish

Androgynie is from Orly’s Holiday Soireé collection. The combination of the sheer black base and the gold and multi-colored glitter make me think of New Year’s Eve. This is a fun color, and I got a lot of compliments while wearing it.

Application was ok. I would have liked the hex glitter pieces to have distributed more evenly (some nails got more pieces than others).  Three coats and a top coat shown.

Orly Emberstone

 - by Playing with Polish

Emberstone is another awesome polish from Orly’s Mineral FX collection. I am not usually into orange polish on me, but this is a really cool color! It is a bright reddish orange with multi-colored orange, gold, purple and pink shimmer. I love it! :-D I was hoping that the sun would peek out for some photos, but the cloud cover was persistant. It seems that the shimmer colors showed up more strongly in diffuse light, so that might be a good thing. :-) You can especially see the shimmer colors if you click on the photo to enlarge.

Your Go To Polishes?

 - by Playing with Polish

Recently someone found out that I had a nail polish blog, and naturally they asked me about my favorite polish. My brain froze – too many to think about! I love just about anything by BB Couture, Orly has really put out some awesome polish, China Glaze’s OMG collection really rocks, and Nfu Oh can always be counted on for something that packs a lot of punch.  Do I even have a favorite? I couldn’t say I have a favorite. It really depends on what I am craving.  However, I do have a “go to” polish. One that I reach for again and a gain. Although it changes, right now my  go to polish is Orly’s Rage. When I look at my collection faced with indecision, Rage is always a good choice. It boasts excellent application and drying time. When I am wearing rage, I am always pleased gazing at my beautiful rose gold nails :-) It is a good vacation choice too because without being a boring nude sheer, the lighter pinkish color manages to hide a bit of wear.

What are your go tos? Is it a particular polish or a brand that you know won’t let you down?

Orly Royal Velvet

 - by Playing with Polish

Royal Velvet is from Orly’s spring 2011 Precious collection. Royal Velvet has a dark purple base with an intense blue shimmer. The shimmer gives this polish a lot of dimension, and it really does look a bit like velvet. What can I say? I LOVE IT! Shimmery, rich and delicious purple goodness – It doesn’t get much better than this! I plan to reach for this polish again and again. :D

The wear is pretty good too. Of course this polish was destined to be a full manicure, and I have been wearing it for three days. I have a little bit of tip wear, but no nicks or chips in sight. Application was very good. It took three coats for maximum opacity, but it went on very smoothly. Three coats and a top coat shown.

Orly Here Comes Trouble

 - by Playing with Polish

Here Comes Trouble is another dense glitter from the new summer Pin-up collection. This one is a bright slightly yellow leaning green. Like Bubbly Bombshell it has a mixture of fine and hex glitters.  While Bubbly Bombshell has a clear base, Here Come Trouble has a yellowish-green one. This a a fun color for summer! :-)

Application was very good. This has a smooth finish for a glitter polish. It is similar to the recent foil finish polishes. Three coats and a top coat shown.

Orly Royal Navy (another blue for Autism Awareness Month)

 - by Playing with Polish

Orly’s Royal Navy has been sitting in my untried box for quite a while now. I am not sure why it took me so long to try it, but what a shame because it sure is a beauty! It is a bright royal blue with fine teal glitter :-D Such a beautiful summer blue, and application was a breeze too! I have a feeling I will be sporting this polish a few times this summer (and that it will make a great pedicure too!).

Orly Tis’ the Season

 - by Playing with Polish

Here are two beauties from Orly’s holiday collection Tis’ the Season. It seems way too early to be thinking about Christmas though!

Meet Me Under the Mistletoe

Meet Me Under the Mistletoe is a blue leaning forest green shimmer.

This polish was pretty opaque. I almost had full coverage in one coat. Application was very good. Two coats and a top coat shown.

Rockin’ Rocket

Rockin’ Rocket is wine colored with a gold shimmer. It is very festive! I am a bit confused about the name on this one. Rocket does not have any Christmas/holiday association for me. Rockin’ Rockette would make more sense! I double checked and my bottle says Rockin’ Rocket. Oh well, it’s still a beautiful color!

This polish was also pretty opaque, and I probably could have gotten away with one coat. Application was very good. Two coats and a top coat shown.

Overall these are fun holiday colors with great application. I am glad I added these two to my collection! :-)

Orly Cosmic FX – Galaxy Girl, Lunar Eclipse & Space Cadet

 - by Playing with Polish

Orly’s much anticipated Cosmic FX collection includes six colors. I selected three that seemed the most interesting and displayed a duochrome effect. Each of these had a stunning glass fleck/foil finish. I absolutely love space themes, and could not wait to try these on! :-D

Galaxy Girl

A lovely deep purplish-plum with teal colored flecks. This has a slight duochrome teal/dark pink.

Lunar Eclipse

A vibrant blue with purple/pink duochrome flecks. The duochrome is not as noticeable on the nail, but it is still a knockout!

Space Cadet

In a way Space Cadet was a bit like our trip to Italy – everywhere I turned there was something new and beautiful to photograph! No matter how I turned my hand Space Cadet was showing another side of its stunning personality! :-D This polish shows the most duochrome effect both in the bottle and on the nail. It is green/gold/rose/plum. WOW!

I really loved all of these polishes, especially Lunar Eclipse and Space Cadet. These are fun colors I will want to wear again and again! I think they are a must have!

Orly Butterflies

 - by Playing with Polish

Orly Butterflies is a sheer bright pink crème. Sally’s had a ring around the bottle marking it as a new product, but I believe it has been out for several years. This is a bright summery color. Although I did have visible nail lines even after three coats, I still thought it was quite pretty. I really like this one!
